Completely labour saving with a thick bark mulch and ground hugging conifer (Yew I think).
Last but not least the lovely bark of a Silver Birch.

Its Aubretia Drc. Yes the daffs do look nice down at the base and I love the Silver Birch too. Thank you both.

Your ground hugging conifer could be juniperus chinensis:)

Okasia, I think (after looking in my RHS book) it is certainly Juniperus, but 'Horizontalis'. It spreads over a wide area, about 10ft in this case, and really is an ideal weed suppressor.

hard to tell more - from that distance - but isn't horizontalis just few inches tall? In Poland there was a trend to grow mostly conifers, so that's why I thought about chinensis. It is taller than horizontalis, branches more layered - and it is wonderfull for keeping weeds under control, I agree:) Or it could be j. x media as well. There is just to many to know all of them:) and I am thinking about one behind the birch - it seems like there is quite few of them there:)

Ared we looking at the same one Okasia? The one I mean is hugging the ground. In the foreground is the aubretia, then to the right of the daffodils is the horizontalis. The higher one further on grows widthways like mad, it is always needing to be trimmed back.
