Our Fernery

This was a very small useless concrete area, that tends to be in shade best part of the day. We slabbed it, and found it was the perfect area to grow ferns on in large herb quarter pots. We can pick up a small fern for £2.99, plant it here and within 3/4 weeks, it's large enough to pop into a shaded area of our garden, and really make a statement without the exorbitant cost, as the larger ones tend to be! It makes good use of an awkward corner, and obviously an ideal spot for bringing on shade loving plants. Just goes to prove, however small the area, it can still be put to good use!

Hi San, as long as shady and moist, they will do fine! Never thought I could get away with Ferns in my garden, as when we do get the sun, it is with us the best part of the day, we are so lucky in that respect! But as my garden has developed over the years, I have found a few areas perfect for Ferns, and this really is the ideal area to grow them on, considering how useless it was for anything else, so am quite chuffed with results!

It's wet again here today, and showery sunday so they say. Monday could be dry~yippee! My Ferns are loving the water, such a pity I'm not lol!:~(((( Know it's hard to bounce back after a bit of a disaster San, but it will get sorted sweetheart, and be better than ever I promise! Our disaster is the collapse of a small retaining wall, which in our naivety we really didn't do that well, I know that now, but how I wish I had that insight back then! This means I've got collapsing trellis, and probably have to take out a raised bed to correct it, oh my poor poor plants! {~((( ~See? It can happen to anyone, just put it down to a steep learning curve San X

This was pretty damp out when I took this, so not looking as good as they usually do, but we were so lucky with this corner, when it was good for nothing else, and due to being in shade so much of the day, the quarter pots don't tend to dry out so much, so ideal for this purpose. Thanks for your kind comment Sixpence :~))

Out of all the good GoY does, the wonderful support system we have among each other, has to be the best.I kind of had a bit of a cuss when the wall collapsed, but you live and learn San! We will get it sorted, and be wiser from the situation, we live, we learn, we plod on.........:~)) Lolx

This area was originally meant for herbs, but found they got really 'leggy', but Ferns work an absolute treat here! Am glad you have found a little inspiration from this, Cristina :~))
