Digging trenches for drainage

After the bad weather we've had recently it has become apparent that we do need to add a drainage system. We've bought perforated piping and gravel and will dig a 2ft by 3ft hole and tributaries to drain off the worst of any rainfall. Soil is so clay-ey that it's just staying on surface at the moment.

We have clay soil, I squelched across the lawn today ! Have never known it so wet in the 9 years we've lived here. : o( (
