Amaryllis seedlings in living room with David 2010-04-17 (Amaryllis Hippeastrum)

Amaryllis seedlings in living room with me, Balcony! I sowed the seeds of these Amaryllis 4 years ago. I have at least 10 now open on the table in our living room; more are opening every day! I have nearly 50 plants!

Wow ... they are looking terrific. Nice to meet you face to face ... so to speak ... David! What are you going to do with 50 huge Amaryllis? Is there room out there on the balcony or will they be living indoors?

Thanks, Sanbaz! This is the surprise photo I mentioned in a couple of my commentaries! :-) I took this photo of myself using my camera phone built in timer. It's been the very first time I've used this function & the only picture I took as well! I thought I would have to take several or get my wife to take one of me.

Bernieh, I think our posts came up about the same time!

You ask:"What are you going to do with 50 huge Amaryllis?" I hadn't thought about it before they flowered. They have stayed a whole year on the kitchen & bedroom window sills until I moved them into the living room a couple of days ago. With such long leaves it's going to be difficult putting them back in the windows so I suppose they will have to go on the balcony - if I could only extend it out wards another metre! <Sigh!>

Lol! I've got visions of your balcony garden just suddenly popping outwards with the growing number of plants sitting out there! Maybe your next door neighbour would like some plants and then you could slowly fill up all the balconies where you live!!! Now that would be something to see!

They are huge !
I'm sitting here in a jersey the same colour of yours - soon it will be covered by a second as winter sets in...

Thanks for all your lovely comments! :-) I'm very pleased that you all like them so much! I can't take my eyes off of them! I've taken dozens of photos, only a tiny handful have been uploaded.

I wasn't expecting such a marvellous show for their first year of flowering! I thought I would get a few flowers form the plants in the kitchen as last year I put the biggest, strongest looking bulbs in 6" pots while the rest, that I didn't expect to flower for another year, all went into 5" pots & into our bedroom window.

I've been very surprised with the sheer size of the flowers!!! They are by far the biggest Amaryllis flowers I've ever grown & I've been growing them ever since my sister gave me one for Christmas, back in 1981!

I took the bulb with me when we moved back to Spain 8 months later & I had dozens & dozens of plants over the years. They all flowered every year but my only attempt to germinate some seeds failed. But this 2nd attempt has been "embarrassingly" successful!!!

'Embarrassingly' successful is terrific ... they really are stunners!

Wait till you see my blog with many more photos in it of these lovely flowers!

They look fantastic! And great to meet you! All these babies must have known they were in a good place, getting cared for.

Thanks so much, BT! :-)

Bernieh, You ask:"What are you going to do with 50 huge Amaryllis?" I think I have the answer at long last! I think I will plant them on the allotment for the summer so they can fatten up! I just don't have the space for nearly 50 plants. Their leaves can be HUGE! Putting them back into the kitchen & bedroom windows, after moving them to the living room, will be practically impossible. The leaves are now growing & they also dry out very quickly.

I'm going to prepare a place on the allotment so I can look after them better. In the autumn I'll dig them up again before the frosts arrive. I'll cut back any remaining leaves & then dry them out. I don't know what I will do with them when it's time to plant them again - I'll have a lot more than 50 bulbs because I intend to separate the "baby" bulbs from their "mums" but I shall wait till autumn before doing that.

See my new blog for more photos of my seedlings.

Any buyers? LOL! :-D

If only the Customs would turn their eyes away ... I would certainly love to have some! Lol! I'm sure these plants will love their holiday at the allotment ... what a show they will make.

WOW!!!

They are unlikely to produce any more flowers this year whether they are at home or on the allotment. Such huge blooms take an awful lot out of the bulbs. They will need as much sun as they can get, as well as fertilizer, to build up their reserves for next year. Much the same as with any annually flowering bulb like Daffs, Crocuses, Tulips, etc.

So pleased, Michaella, that you recognize the WOW! factor! :-)
