The poplar has large early buds, some are actually cottonwood but I can't tell them apart until the catkin gets larger on the cottonwood. Loved the sunset color on the bark.

They are very distinctive in spring. The hillsides are beautiful. We have leaves in just a few days with all our light. The green is just showing so it will all be over by the weekend. Its wonderful! Our cottonwood as loaded with bloom right now. They look good but I know about the problem they can cause with all that.....lol....cotton! I got a shot of one to post, just haven't moved it over yet.

Pretty trees at this time of year... strange you should mention cottonwood...I have a large one which loses limbs if the wind is strong! and just now it's catkins are all over the garden...getting into the pond water and plugging up the pump!~ I love the misty green of the deciduous trees as they start to leaf...maples are red...poplar the very definition of spring green...choke cherry and crabapple are blooming! You can tell the mix of the forest by the blotches of spring colour!
