I was thinking of something like it ... grass is grass, ho-hum. I want raised beds, which means taking some grass out, leaving enough for a walkway round the edge. And grow something a bit more interesting than that single huge shrub!

That sounds good to me Fran, when I spoke about gravel or concrete I was thinking in terms of our neighbour gravel front and back garden not a sign of green anywhere and I have to make sure that non of my larger shrubs overhang the fences by the mearest whisker.

my previous "garden" was the size of a large bath towel, and was paved; except for a "border" that was twelve inches wide and only nine inches deep- there was a layer of brick at taht depth, as I found out! too shallow for plants but no prob to the weeds!!

I do NOT want that kind of "garden" again! only able to use pots, and only so big, cos I couldn't lift or move bigger ones. Mind you, wiht raised beds, they're sort of very large "pots", but there'll be some real in-the-ground plants between them.

I can't understand why people concrete or gravel their gardens - I don't even like concrete with spaces holes for plants to grow thortugh - if they don't want a the bother of a garden, there are tens of thousand of houses where they woudln't be incovenienced!! Three are plenty of people who'd be only too keen to take it on.

I want raised beds partly cos I'm severely visually impaired and bave a lower-spine injury - my useful visual range is about four inches, so working at ground leel means a comination of kneeling, bending and hunching! can't do too much of that at any one time.

my other reason is to add interest with chances of level - I want to break the garden up into smaller areas - couuld use screens, but raised beds would make "dividers", and they could be themed - lol, had fantasies about mini-zen garden, mini-pastoral landscape, mini-just-about-anything! !
