28 May 2010, local wild orchid in the garden

28 May 2010, local wild orchid in the garden (Anacamptis pyramidalis)

These pretty flowers were everywhere on the road side. Last year when my neighbour said this was a "wild orchid", I thought "come on, this can't be an orchid." But this year when I looked closely, I noticed each flower had the distinct shape unique to an orchid and I fell for it. Just adorable :)

That is so pretty - any idea what the species is?

I'm afraid I have no idea. It has only a few short (3-5cm) thin (1cm) leaves and some short roots which are not hard/tough. In this picture the colour is rather pale in the sun but buds are darker, more like dark pink. I'll upload another picture in a little vase, although it is not a good photo. The length of the flower clump is about 6-10 cm; kind of tiny.

Thank you Moti and Simbad :) I googled 'Dactylorhiza' and found a similar plant in Wikipedia. I'm not sure but 'Pyramidal orchid' looks very similar to this one.
