Spathodea campanulata - African Tulip Tree in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA.

Is it the same tree or 2 different ones as some flowers are red and others orange
it looks stunning ..:o))

It's the light Mushy ... the flowers can look red sometimes, but they're really a bright orange.

Great photo Andy. My Spathodea is, as usual, the last one in the neighbourhood to bloom. Whilst all the others are literally covered, just like this one in the photo, mine has just started showing a few flowers across the top!!! I've dubbed it 'The Sloth'!!

Bernieh is correct. It's the lighting. This photo was taken against the sun light...which isn't a good way to take photos. The flowers are a glowing orange with red around the edges of the funnel-shaped flowers. There's also a golden/yellow variety which is very common here also.

Thanks! African Tulip trees are very strange. They all seem to have different bloom cycles....I've seen trees in bloom here every month of the year. However, the majority of trees have their heaviest bloom from late June - November.

I believe you're thinking of the hardy Liriodendron tulipifera - Tulip Tree, which has light yellow tulip-like flowers. This tree is native tropical central Africa (the Congo region).

Thanks! This photo was take with my old digital camera. It didn't capture the true colors of the flowers.

Some colours just don't register truly, it's very frustrating! Purple iris always come out blue on my camera!

Yes, I know the feeling...and even my new camera doesn't capture purple very well, also. Purple always looks bluer, the same as your camera.

the workings of a camera are beyond me and certainly this colour issue is more than i can understand

Sometimes the cameras have to calibrated for certain colors. I know the white balance on my camera is off.

doesnt seem to matter what i do to the white balance or even vivid colours!

It could just be the camera. Is it a newer camera?

It's about 18 months old?

It's pretty new. It should have all the fancy, advanced functions.

it has lots of stuff but i have taken pictures with several different settings and still cant get the colour

I took a digital camera class about 6 years ago. There's so many setting for different situations...it's almost impossible to remember them all!

I ought to go on a course to find out more!
