Yellowtree:
I really do love this tree! However, I do know African Tulip trees can become very invasive...especially in the wet tropics and subtropics. They have even naturalized in some neighborhoods here in San Diego, even with our dry subtropical climate.
This very commonly grown golden/yellow variety of African Tulip tree is grafted...its seeds would grow the typical orange/red flowering trees though.

I can see why too Andy a gardeners dream to me this one.

Sixpence:
It doesn't grow as tall and large as the orange variety, also. The variety aurea is a grafted tree.

I like small trees so that would suit me as I have a small garden compared to what I use to have. Do they graft it to get it to bloom quicker like they do the Wisteria over here.

Sixpence:
This this tree usually tops out at 30ft/ 10m or possible a little taller.
It's grafted on the the common orange species rootstock. Spathodea campanulata 'aurea' seeds to not produce these yellow/golden flowers...they revert back to the orange colored flowers (which is typical for this species).

That is very interesting Andy and 30ft would be a big tree to me lol.
28 Mar, 2011
Spathodea campanulata can grow to over 80ft/25m. in the tropics...the largest one I've seen here was 60ft/18m tall.
29 Mar, 2011
That is tall I have bought seeds to a tree that is the quickest growing tree in the world its called the Saphire tree do you know it it will grow 10ft in first year.

Sixpence:
I think you mean Paulownia tomentosa (it's called: Empress tree, Foxglove tree, there's several other common names). It's a very fast growing tree for the first few years. There are actually faster growing trees here, many are in the legume family.
31 Mar, 2011
Yes thats the one Andy has a pretty flower, I did nt realise it was so big lol.
31 Mar, 2011
I've seen some trees to 40ft/13m tall here.
31 Mar, 2011
That would be too big for my garden but I shall have a go at planting the seed
31 Mar, 2011
I'm sure it'll grow well for you. :>)

African tulip are considered a pest here in Fiji. But that is quite an unusual colour. The one we have here is bright reddish/orange..
