thanks everyone - there is also a purple clematis clambering through the berberis but dont think its flowering yet - i will post a pic if and when it does

Update - grrrrgh I'm SOOOOOO silly - that plant at the back is blissfully unaware that I MISTAKENLY called it a berberis - Shame on me. I have just realised that it's a Cotinus Coggygria, a royal purple 'Smokebush', yes, Flori, (thanku for your comment) well, no need to be wondering anymore, here's the dry-run). Talk about learning something new everyday (yes, but how many times in a day, I ask myself constantly).
How did I not notice there was a distinct lack of thorns on this 'berberis'??? The mad thing is, I saw a beautiful standard cotinus on ebay and was about to buy it when I had one of those 'ding' moments- Mmmm, I thought, that looks terribly familiar in the enlarged pic............
