Hostas

My favourite Hostas....and we've had so many problems....The usual spot at the front, where it is normally cool and they flourish well there, was invaded by something which I could not find....despite greasing the Planters and moving them away from the walls, they were still being attacked....I cut off so many leaves, I thought they would go bald.....So my hubby moved them to the back garden where they are not attacked anymore, but the sun is too much for them....So we now have a dilemma....how to keep them safe, and happy at the same time.....

Morning Olive,
The Hostas look fine from a distance, but I did take drastic action in the end, and cut them back, leaving the buds, there were three on one planter - two on another and one solitary bud on the last one, and I found the culprit, an Earwig......I don't suppose it was the only culprit, I expect the birds had a go, but there were no signs of slug or snails....The snails make a delicious meal for my Chickens Olive, they adore them....One of the biggest houses for snails is the Day Lily they love the moisture of the leaves and get deep down inside, they too make meals for my Chickens.....We have removed one a few days ago, far too much room was being taken up, and it was crowding out other Plants, it was donated to a neighbour....So happy all round.....

Yes I have chickens they used to have the run of my garden also, but then the nasty fox came and started to wipe them out and I decided to keep them safer in their own pen and run, they are quite happy but that means the snails have free range, BUT we have had a thrush again for the third year in a row set up home and nest and rear babies they are so beautiful. Two babies again this year, she is so busy killing the snails and finding worms great to see. Love my chickens but hate seeing their headless bodies when I got up in a morning - prefer them to be safe than getting myself in a sad mood and of course worrying that he was coming again each night. Hope the gardening is going well have had to have a break from mine, knee on one leg and ankle on the other playing up - think the heat has affected my joints badly. Old age is upon me - ah well, making the most of the relaxation time, off to have coffee and just sit and look for the time being. Getting back to normal hopefully this week.

they look fine, obviously something that likes hosta leaves was having a go, do you think it was snails or slugs or could it have been a bird, they are very pretty hostas, I like this one. Thank goodness we have not been hit by the slugs or snails this season, but I have a pair of thrushes which keep on cracking open the shells of the snails, keep finding them on the paths, it's a horrible sensation when you walk along and suddenly something crunches under your feet. I always cringe until I find out it is an empty shell, don't know why I cringe cos the little devils are a pain in the backside, but I still can't kill them myself, strange person that I am, I hate what they do but can't bring myself to squash them. Poison them yep but squash them no. What is that all about eh!!
