It's the first time to grow cannas, to tell you the truth :)
Some have beautiful leaves and, in my humble opinion,
it's worth having cannas just for the foliage :)

I couldn't agree more! The leaves are incredible! Is it mild enough in France for them to stay in the ground, as thought they were not that hardy?

It will be okay in the ground over winter, because I saw lots of them survived the winter without any protection. But variegated ones are less hardy, according to Will Giles (he lost most of his cannas this winter), and I don't want to risk it (and lose it), so I'm going to dig it up. Better to be safe than sorry~~ :)

Either that or mulch really heavily to keep some of the warmth in the ground~it is heartbreaking when you lose a plant because of the weather :~((

Mmmmmmnnn.
I have to think about mulching them heavily.
It requires less work... I definitely think about it.
Mulching will do, maybe.
Thanks for the idea Flori :)

Just protect as much as you can, Tommy. I always think that having to dig something up can end up in damaging the roots, so as long as they are protected as much as poss, and the 'crown' is covered, hopefully it will survive.
