Healthy looking fish Lori. :-)

Thanks, this is the first year that they bred. I now have eight or ten little black shadows flitting about... will be a few weeks before they start to have colour. This is the largest of the three fish rescued from disaster. they also change to deeper colour when out in the pond. And markings can change too... I have one which is totally white when in the pond but develops black and orange patches when in the aquarium.

Sounds interesting, the keeping of these fish. I did like keeping fish the one time I have. Neat things.

I love goldies! and if you have an aquarium near your plants it keeps the humidity level up a little from the normally dry 40% winter house humidity/temp. I keep my fish in a large tank with my nymphaea.

Lori:

Very nice fish and aquatic plants. I had goldfish however, every time I would have them critters would eat them.

My neice told me a hilarious (in retrospect) story about three teradactyls ( her word for herons) that tried to clean out her koi pond.... she was behaving strangely...waving a dishtowel...and shouting...and the heron calmly perched on her roof ...waiting and daring her to go inside. In the end...she bought an alligator for her pond..and that discouraged the herons! (The alligator was plastic...sectioned, to appear to move, and available in three sizes... big... huge and gigantic!) The herons return every year...but thank goodness that they haven't bothered to look closely at the alligator!

Lori:

I'll have to remember this information. It sounds like a great idea! : > )

How would your water restrictions play into having a pond? would they charge you a great deal for the water to fill it?

10 Aug, 2010

Lori:

Not sure. I assume it would have to be filled over several days.

good grief~! A gallon at a time? perhaps just a small waterfall to get the sound of water in the garden...

Lori:

My friend in Northern San Diego has had a custom home built...and he's got a huge koi pond. He did say he just kept the water running until it was filled.

like mine - very nice

Great fish, aren't they, Paul? I prefer them to koi. To me they are prettier, hardier and not as expensive. There are numerous types too...I like the standards...but the comets are like underwater faeries...with long flowing fins.

We had 2 kois both died in the winter everything else survived

yes the nicest fish - charmers they are

Now that they are in the aquarium...they watch for me to walk by the tank...they swim expectantly to the surface and kinda of dance, spitting bubbles...trying to get me to stop and feed them...the greedy little critters! (and no it's not because the water is low in oxygen...they are just social!)
