I lost a 20 year old a few years ago. I felt so bad about it, even though I knew he was an exceptionally old cat. It's never easy to lose them.

Mine was fine....then one day I came home from work, he looked at me and fell over. I stayed with him until he died. It was so sad, even though he was ancient & I knew he didn't have long.
The cat I use as my avatar is Jet - still very much with us, fortunately! I think you should get another cat. I have 15!

I have stayed for all of them - I can't leave them there. I guess I have to look at the alternative. It's so fast, really just seconds. Mine are all buried on my property. I take in cats with feline leukemia, so I do have a lot of losses....they get to the point where they have to be put down, no amount of money or vet care will save them. Once they have symptoms, that's it, they're gone. So once they show symptoms I have them put down. We've gone through the blood transfusions and all that. I will never subject another one to intensive treatment again. I put one on a very expensive treatment and she was doing great, then I took her to get spayed and the vet (not my regular vet) gave her too much anaesthesia and killed her. That was hard, it was the worst day of my life.
