Louise - I have two hibiscuses. They both grow in sheltered positions in full sun. The book says fertile, well-drained soil - one of mine is growing on clay, the other in poor soil but backed by a south-facing wall. I would say it's the sun and shelter that are important and enusring they are not waterlogged during winter

I have just the spot for it, i was hoping you weren't going to say acid soil because i would have been scuppered !
The spot it'll eventually go is indeed full sun, well drained and very sheltered by 2 walls :-))

It's supposed to prefer a neutral to alkaline soil but seems quite happy with my slightly acid conditions.
Don't foget to allow space and not plant it too close to those walls - although they will take some pruning, they're not huge fans of an annual slaughter. I take out any twiggy growth to open out the middle plus taking off a complete branch occasionally to reduce the spread rather than nibbling away at the ends. This is done in winter with the leaves off which makes it easier to see what you are doing

Where do you grow this one Andrew, sites, soil, position ?
A gardening friend gave me one about 2 or 3 years ago, it was about 2" high and he'd grown it from seed, it's 'now' about 7" tall and doing really well ..... 'this' is the first year it's looked 'well' so i can see now that's it's on its way :-)))))))))))))
It's in a pot now but i'm interested to know more about yours, for when i plant mine out.
