If you have a dog, it would chase away cats which are not owned by you...
but that may not be a suitable answer for you ...

I haven't found a way to keep cats out of my plants. I have no houseplants for that reason. They destroyed a Bismarkia palm over the winter plus some birds-nest ferns. Some people say that cats hate the smell of citrus, so you could put lemon or orange peels in the pots. Last year I tried "Bitter Barrier" - it won't hurt the cats, but it tastes awful - but that really didn't work as a deterrent. I also tried putting bamboo skewers in the soil, thinking the cats would hate the sharp points. Didn't work - they just found a way to straddle them. I wish I had better advice.

Are they coming after your female cats Katrina?

Katrina, If you can get hold of some real vanilla essence, not the imitation one, cats really dont like it, Don't know why, but it has always worked for me. :)

You could also try some Lion poo. pellets. You can get these here, the cats don't go near them, understandably!

...oh, and there is also an ultra high pitched device which is inaudible to humans, but keeps the cats away apparently. I've never tried either method, as I don't have this problem, but I remember when I used to have it in my old home and I would have to go out and wash the house walls with bleach to get rid of the smell...yuck!

I have heard that there are some types of plants/flowers, which cats do not like. My cats love my lavenders and roses and it is funny to watch them how they smell them each morning. HOwever, male cats are really nasty, they "mark" each pot. Instead of nice smell it is sometimes like on a public toilet there. Can somebody gove me advice how to get rid of cats, but not to hurt them? Sounds silly, I know.
