It appears to be solitary and resting...?dying? sad, but it hasn't moved far for where I first saw it.

Is it still intact Lori? Perhaps it is now a shed exoskeleton and the grasshopper has moved on...

OOps ! Forget that - I just saw that it was winged & I don't think they shed after getting their wings.....

We've just had two days of heavy rain...about 6" in my rain meter bucket on the deck!. Don't know if she's still around ....no sign of her. I think she was laying eggs.

Great close-up, wouldn't have noticed how colorful it was at a distance. It pays to take a closer look sometimes doesn't Lori.

Well as they say, "Beauty's in the eye of the beholder"....
I can see why ancient artists copied them as pieces of jewellery.. the cicada I found looked like it was made from jade!

Too right, Paul. They are formidable..from what I've read on the i-net, the difference between locust and grasshopper is that the locust swarms...grasshoppers remain relatively solitary. otherwise, they appear to be the same insect. Agriculture seems to have destroyed the mass breeding areas of the locust in North America. can't say that I feel that was a loss! have to wonder what other animals and birds that loss affected though.
