In LIBYA during World War 2 the Allied and Axis troops surged back and forth over the desert lands in the north. Tobruk has today a neat and moving cemetery; and the remains of Fig Tree Hospital, a field hospital manned by the Australians. These figs were planted to hide the large cave below where the wounded were tended. Australian soldiers left taking seeds with them which flourished in Australia. Today these figs in the desert of Libya are known are the "mother of all figs."
