Sungold tomatoes ready to dry - 220810

Sungold tomatoes ready to dry - 220810

Sungold tomatoes are very sweet, are golden when ripe, as their name suggests (not red).
We normally let them dry in the open air, in full sun, sprinkled with salt.
But this time it rained a lot, so we left them in a lukewarm oven for some time, sometimes even keeping the oven door slightly open. After that we froze them.
From the internet:
Cordon (Indeterminate). An excellent new tomato for glasshouse or outdoor culture to provide lots of deliciously different fruit for salads etc. Tomato Sungold has an exceptional and very high sugar content (it definitely rivals 'Gardeners Delight') these attractive golden orange, approx. 13 gram, fruit are irresistible with a sweet flavour all their own -almost a dessert fruit! Sungold crops well and has resistance to Tobacco Mosaic Virus and Fusarium to ensure healthy plants.
Sowing Instructions
For greenhouse culture sow seeds late winter to early spring 1.5mm (1/16in) deep. Germination usually takes 6-14 days at 24-27C (75-80F).

Am growing "Sungold" for the first time, Hilda. Many Thanks for the tips. Is salt still required when drying in an oven?

I've asked the great chef here ;-) Philip thinks it is better to add some salt, for the tomatoes will absorb humidity as quickly as possible, and then will get mildewed. It takes a long time before they dry completely in the oven. That's why we froze them still with some liquid in them.
When it is very hot and sunny, we sometimes dry them in the open air, covered with a muslin cloth (to protect against flies and other insects).

Oh, Hilda, Many Thanks for this information - much appreciated!!! Don't think that, here in Scotland, will get many more "hot" days this year! :-)))

It has rained cats and dogs these last few days (weeks?), so perhaps it will be the same over here ;-( I just hope our tomatoes in the garden will stay okay with this awful weather...)
