I have heard that if i cover my tomato plant with a plastic bag and a banana inside does this really help to ripen them.As my tomatoes are still very green?

Covering the plant with plastic will cause dampness which is the last thing you want to have. Putting picked green tomatoes in a brown paper bag, or in a drawer, with a banana among them, is, perhaps, what you are thinking of?
There is still time for them to ripen on the plant, yet, though.
