Meanie:
Which Tibouchina species do you have?
There's a dozen species or so which grow here.

When it blooms you'll find out. : > )
The most commonly grown one in CA is Tibouchina urvilleana - Princess Flower.

Meanie:
If it's T. urvilleana -- it should start blooming soon...as it blooms from summer through winter and will rest briefly during spring. Although, I have seen large trees in the San Francisco Bay Area bloom all year.

Tibouchina is one plant I've never grown, but have always wanted to grow. This one is just lovely.

Most species are very easy to grow. I'm sure they would do well in your climate.
Tibouchina granulosa - Purple Glory tree which has more of purplish-pink flower is my favorite.

I have a juvenile Tibouchina which I'm hoping is just about to throw up a flower spike.
They also have really attractive foliage in my opinion.
