Plumeria rubra 'Makanani' in San Diego, CA.

Plumeria rubra 'Makanani' in San Diego, CA. (Plumeria rubra 'Makanani')

This gigantic Plumeria 'Makanani' tree has pink, white and yellow flowers. I posted it back in mid-June when it didn't have any flowers. It's over 22 feet / 6.7 meters tall and is probably more than 30 feet / 10 meters wide. It takes up this house's whole front yard. Photo taken August 26, 2010. This tree was planted in 1960.

That's amazing - how old would you guess that it is?

Meanie:

Most likely it's as old as the housing development...which I can guess is around 50 years old.

I have to go back and see if this tree is blooming. I know this house was sold last year. I just hope the new owner doesn't cut this historic tree down...this would be extremely sad!

I take it,this street has never seen 32f?..lol.

It most likely experienced a freezing temp in Jan of 1963...that's the last time downtown SD went down to freezing...more than 50 years ago.

Unfortunately, this tree split in half in the summer of 2012. The right side still stands and the owners sold off hundreds of cuttings. Fortunately, there are larger and wider Plumeria trees than this one in San Diego. At the time I took this photo this was the widest plumeria I had ever seen in San Diego.

Wow stunning its huge is it still there now.

I think the right section of the tree is there. This tree split a few years back. It was too heavy on the sides. When they get large sometimes you need to put cables in them to prevent this from happening.

I read the owners sold off the cuttings on-line. This Hawaiian variety isn't very common here.

Thats is such a shame intersting they put cables in them is nt it possible to prune them hard to prevent this happening.

Shame you did nt buy some cuttings.

30 May, 2017

Yes, it can be pruned to keep it from getting too top or side heavy. The stems are heavy because the branches store a lot of water.

I would have loved to have purchased a cutting! I didn't find out about the cuttings for sale until it was too late, though. :>((

If I had one I think I would keep it pruned every so often not for it to get to heavy .

Yes such a shame you did nt find out until afterwards never mind you might get one some where else.
If that was my mum she would just go up to one and take a cutting, I ve even known my self just knock on doors and ask if I could have cuttings off plants, that s because I am cheeky, you get use to it when I was married and having a scrap yard we knocked doors asking for scrap when cars were not coming in lol.

That's funny. I've done the same...knocked on doors to get cuttings. Most people here are very generous. That's how I've gotten a lot of plants. ?

2 Jun, 2017

Lol we are two of a kind then yes most love to share dont they and love to chat about their plants when giving you a cutting it nice to know they are friendly there to with you.

2 Jun, 2017

Yes, definitely. I love to give plants away along with cuttings.
