My 'Water' plant

My 'Water' plant

I bought this plant 4" high and only realised when I got home that the label said this was a water plant for ponds, etc. Well, I have no pond but planted it in this pot anyway and wished him luck. Look at him now, what a joy? The pretty pastel shades of these multi coloured leaves have grown and thrived, and have added tremendous variety and texture to my garden. Can't remember what it was called, any ideas? And do you think it's an annual, can I leave him out for the winter?

Hi Anne this is Houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon' its lovely in a pot if very well watered, the white flowers are pretty too. But it is very invasive if it escapes in to your garden as it is a low-growing perennial that spreads by runners to 3 feet or more. I suggest you stand the pot on feet and dont place over a gap in your paving as thats how mine got in to the garden and it took me five years to get rid of it. It will die back over the winter and reappear in the spring. You will find it gets very thick in the pot I used to pluck quite a bit of it out each spring.

Oh, WOW! thank you Drc726. This is excellent information and warning too - I shall keep a very close eye on my Houttuynia now, check for all runners and stand it well away from anything it can grow up to, along to, and down to!
Oh................. I love this site!!!!!!!!!!
