this cicada looked like he had just emerged...he wasn't very active and sat on this piece of paper towelling for a long time...before taking off and flying up into a maple tree. Last two days have been extremely hot...(perfect cicada weather) ...and I've heard him buzzing away in that tree...waiting for a lady friend no doubt!

Great shot lori, I love to hear them in the trees when I'm sitting out on my porch swing. Anyone who says it's quiet in the country haven't heard a few dozen of these little jewels singing their mating song...lol

Yes...it's a symphony, for sure. This year we have so many toads. Just about stepped on one last evening...was taking Mandy for her walkies in the cool darkness..noticed a lump on the step...good thing I didn't take a broom to it! Their song is so loud...but somehow, not intrusive. Toads, treefrogs, cicadas, crickets....the toads and treefrogs hold sway at night...but the cicadas and crickets drown out other noises all day long!

Just as an after thought...Isn't it amazing how much easier the sounds of nature rest on our ears? I think the decibel level of frog and toad song might me akin to some urban emergency sounds but our minds and bodies respond with calm rather than alarm!
