Hibiscus Schizopetalus

Hibiscus Schizopetalus (Hibiscus schizopetalus (Skeleton Hibiscus))

The most disappointing thing about the Eden Project was the difficulty in identifying the plants that I'm unfamiliar with - this is one of them. This was in the rainforest sphere.

It's Hibiscus schizopetalus - the Japanese Lantern hibiscus, Meanie. I have an enormous arching shrub growing here ... it's considered an old-fashioned plant nowadays!

Thank you so much Bernieh!

Old fashioned!! I think that it's exotic!

Lol ... this shrub was a fairly commonplace sight in gardens here in the north more than 50 years ago, but lost it's appeal and it hasn't been seen in many gardens for ages. I'm doing my best to spread the word about just how fantastic this plant is!!

It certainly is a fantastic shrub Bernieh! Good luck on your mission!!

Meanie:

Great close up!

This Hibiscus is widely grown here too. I've posted several pics.

Bernieh:

It's very common here...and isn't considered an old-fashion plant here at all.
The variegated leave variety is common also. Do you see the variegated form there in Queensland?

Thank you Delonix!! We managed to get an Abutilon through the last winter outside, I'm almost tempted to give one of these a punt!

Meanie:

You probably would have very good luck with this one outside in the ground.
Hibiscus schizopetalus is a very tropical shrub...it has no where near the hardiness as Abutilon. It's even more tender than Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.

Thanks Delonix - that's saved me a few quid!!!

Meanie:

I'm glad you understood what I meant. LOL!

Im not surprised this is your favourite Meanie, it really is stunning! So are you going to give this a "go" outside or are you playing safe? I shall watch the outcome with much interest!!

The only way is safe Tet!!
Let's not get ahead of ourselves though - I still have to germinate them........

I have not the slightest doubt of your talent in that direction Meanie! Look forward to the pictures.

Then you could be waiting a while!!!!!

Funny that..you always think things in the garden take a long time to grow/flower/germinate. Then before you know it...it happens. I cant believe our gazebo has been in 4 months and the flowers are nearly over..

I'm reckoning on at least two years..........
