He also adds them to our meals, but does not open them then, at least not for mý portion ;-)

Yes, we do. Exactly as you said, if we 'dare' ;-)
At least... Philip does. He then opens them after they are cooked, splits them carefully, and if you don't eat the seeds, you're practically 'safe'. This way it only adds a bit of 'hotness' to the food.
I like a bit of spiciness, but not too much.
