It's really nice, is it hardy?
9 Mar, 2011
I used to have five different lobelias but after the last couple of winters, I was down to two. This is one of the ones that survived

The reason for me asking is, I thought some of them were not very hardy. I planted Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' in the early part of 09, but it didn't survive the winter. I thought I'd try just once more in a different part of the garden, I didn't hold out much hope for it, but there's signs of new growth. I'll try the one in the photo. Thanks for all your help!

I've had problems keeping 'Queen Victoria' in the past as well. Slugs and snails love it and I don't think it likes our wet winters very much. I have now planted it in a pot which has the bottom couple of inches in water at the side of the pond. In late autumn I put the pond in a cold greenhouse and as soon as new growth appears in the spring, it goes straight back in the pond. This seems to work very well as I have kept it going for several years now

It's in quite heavy soil, but not waterlogged, unlike the other one that died. I'll improve the soil again this year and add more gravel. 'Queen Victoria' has such a striking combination of foliage and flowers, that it's well worth the extra effort trying to keep it alive.

I must've spoken to soon, as the shoot that I thought were Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' turned out to be something else. There's no sign of them yet!
