I was led to believe that they are one of the good guys - is this correct?

I found by google they eat sap and leaves of trees shrubs and herbaceous plants. But not sure how much damage they do. I have found no damage from them in my garden.

My mother hates them because they like to suck the juice from the pears. The result is, the pear has a small tumor-like light brown and hard bit/spot near the surface of the fruits.
