Shield Beetle

Spent yesterday giving the conservatory a good scrub and bleach top to bottom ready for the ever increasing collection of tender plants that need to come in for the winter, and this lovely shield beetle landed on the glass. So here's a shot of the underside

I was led to believe that they are one of the good guys - is this correct?

I found by google they eat sap and leaves of trees shrubs and herbaceous plants. But not sure how much damage they do. I have found no damage from them in my garden.

My mother hates them because they like to suck the juice from the pears. The result is, the pear has a small tumor-like light brown and hard bit/spot near the surface of the fruits.
