Dahlia close up

"say the bells of St. Clements..." My dahlias did a very strange thing this year...they looked fine when I planted the stored tubers ...but they never came up...rotted in the ground. I had some dwarf plants...which came up fine but something started eating them. They looked pathetic until the beginning of Sept....they are blooming now, and frost is just days away. (In fact: this is the first frost free September in a very long time!)
