Work on the lawn area 2-3 Oct 2010

Hi all, I spent the best part of the weekend preparing the lawn area! Some heavy digging! Next time I'll peg it out, check levels, firm it all up etc. The slope was about 30 degrees towards the road, but I am aiming for something like 15-20 to allow run off, but make it more useable by the kids. The final lawn area will be kidney-shaped. I did a sun log, and was pleased find that area gets about 5-8 hours of direct sun a day, so should be plenty for a lawn.

I hope the kids helped!

The eldest (nearly 3), yes, well sort of, by throwing clods of earth in the air and watching them smash on the ground!

I laughed to read about your little helper, Ptarotuos. You have had a busy time clearing in readiness for a lawn. Will you re-use the logs for landscaping or for firewood? You have some nice timber from what is visible on your photo.

I'll probably use them to sure up the ground at the perimeter of the property (more or less where they are currently, but more artistically placed), because the ground drops away to the road quite steeply (about 10 ft). Using them as firewood would be difficult because of the damp problem.

It will look great with the logs and also provide a barrier to the road, as you say. I love the idea of having grass too...much more usable with little children.

Yes, as firewood you would need to stockpile it in a woodshed under cover to dry out I expect. Much nicer as a landscape feature :)
