Stopped off at a garden centre today and came out with this gorgeous and healthy Hibiscus for a fiver!! As if the conservatory isn't full enough already!

Oooh I feel for you.

Meanie:
You got yourself the common red Hibiscus. It's know by many names around the world. In California it's commonly called Hibiscus 'San Diego Red' or 'Hawaiian Red'.

Thanks Delonix!
Not so common around here as evidenced by the full asking price of £15!!
Would you know the latin name?

Meanie:
The Latin name is: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis var. 'San Diego Red' or 'Brilliant' or 'Hawaiian Red'.
It's the state flower of Hawai'i.
Wow! That's expensive! A 15 gallon tropical Hibiscus costs $15 - $25 here...and they're usually at least 6 feet/ 2meters tall.

You're a star man Delonix! I can update the details now.
Fifteen quid here gets an 18inch plant here, although to be fair, this particular garden centre is notoriously expensive around here! In their defense though, they do have a very good selection of well cared for house plants and orchids, are not part of a chain and when they reduce their prices they do it properly! This was reduced because a stem had been snapped off making it a little one sided!

Meanie:
It sounds a little pricey. However, since they have to raised in greenhouses I guess it's not too bad.
Sometimes it's worth paying a little more to get good quality plants.
You'll have to let me know how well it blooms as an indoor plant. I'm so used to them being grown in hot, full sun in the ground here...they tend to need a lot of sun and heat to bloom well.

I think that I've touched on the price of some things before. Use the link below as a gateway into the only company that I recommend for mail order buying at the moment and check out the prices of the plants that you're familiar with (and the pot sizes). We get what we pay for - and a slightly damaged plant for a third of the price was fine by me!!

Lovely, I have two of these but mine are outdoors. I received my tree peony from e-bay a few days ago. We can't help but be bad.
