Geranium procurrens as a climber

This photo shows how I like to use one of my geranium procurrens plants as a climber. It grows through and up my Pyracantha bush. The flowers really stand out against the dark green leaves of the Pyracantha. It will still be in flower during November!

It is a natural trailing plant:my mum grows this and Geranium 'Rozanne' in wall baskets. The plant will spread for several feet if left, and will root at the leaf nodes. This is a great way to propagate it: when it has sent out the long, trailing stems, pot up some small plant pots with compost and partially bury them in the border under a leafy joint. Gently push the leafy joint into the top of the plant pot and mound some compost over it, firming it down gently. Leave for 4 weeks or so, remembering to water it if the weather is dry. Check the plant to see if it has rooted, which it should have and you have an already potted young plant! You could try this with Geranium wallichianum and Geranium christensenianum as well.

Until I joined GOY I had no idea that geraniums came in other than the regular red and pink that is seen everywhere. And to find there are trailing geraniums will make for interesting planting in soil and in pots next year.
I agree they do look nice meandering through the green foliage.

I am fanatical about Geraniums and Pelargoniums: more people should grow them. Unfortunately, they do get a bad press just like Crocosmias (I love them as well!) but this is due in part to a lack of knowledge and also to the older generation (no disrespect to anyone intended!) of gardeners who had a very limited choice of Geranium to choose from. It is possible to have a choice of Geraniums in all sorts of colours and leaf shapes, flowering from April until the beginning of November. Not bad eh!

Yes, GDad....geraniums have come a long way! Flowering from April to November is wonderful to know. I prefer the smaller, meandering ones myself....never been too keen on the older red varieties.

Great idea!

Never thought of planting them in wall baskets Gdad, what a brilliant idea, especially for propagation. Seeds are so iffy and take ages. Do they winter okay in this position? I should imagine wall baskets more exposed than putting them in the ground.

The hardy geraniums mentioned should be perfectly hardy, but they would be better taken out of a wall basket and potted up. They can then be planted out again in the spring. My Geranium procurrens is planted in the ground at the foot of the rose and just does its own thing.

I was wandering around the garden at some unmentionable time this morning, looking at my geraniums. I have one under the obelisk which is covered with clematis and blow me...noticed it was trying to climb up the clematis..way over 2ft tall now..
I will try the hanging basket bit, and pot up late autumn as you suggest. I prefer hardy geraniums to perlagoniums any day tho they can look lovely and cheerful with their reds and oranges..but I havent the patience to overwinter them or take cuttings..I reckon geraniums are far easier!

I had no idea that they could do that! Is it only a certain variety that's suitable?
