Pandanus ultilis - Screw Pine, Madagascan Screw Pine

Screw Pine is generally grown very close to the coast. Quail Botanical Gardens is located only a mile from the beach. It's a very drought tolerant plant which is very picturesque...however, it's not too widely grown in the common landscape here because of the horrible spines on the leaves (they're like razor blades). Yes, when it's young...but, it does eventually become a tree.

Sounds like it would make a great privacy hedge/fence.
