should i be taking cuttings now?

no it is easier in the spring. usually around April. hardwood cuttings can be taken from some of the tougher fuchsias like hawkshead and gold mountain but generally you get better results from green tip cuttings in spring and summer. your summer cuttings can be bigger than the ones you take in spring. I take cuttings up to october but they are slower to root late on and the percentage of success drops a lot

i shall try very hard to remember ~ thank you
i think i may have a hawkshead which i like very much but there were hardly any flowers on it this year ~ how can i improve it?

hi sticki
if your hawkshead is planted outside in the ground it should give you plenty of flowers.if it is in a pot , I would plant it out in the spring. a good mulch would be helpful if your ground tends to get very dry in summer . other than that any high potash feed should help. tomorite is good. if you are cutting it back in mid season that can delay flowering, and can be the reason for fewer blooms

thanks islander, it is planted outside, i dont remember cutting it back ~ should i do that in the spring? i will definitely give it some tomorite next year ~ thank you. the soil can get dry when its really hot, i tried to keep up with the watering but maybe not enough?

a few inches of composted material round the base of your plant will help keep the roots moist in summer.i pinch out the tips early spring just after the new growth starts this makes the plant grow bushier, but if you do it later it will delay the flowers. fuchsias like a moist soil but like most plants too much water isn't good either
