One of my all time favourites, this and Gold Brian. I've never had any problems with them in the winter. I posted some pics of them flowering and covered with snow early this year.

Mine didn't like it one bit girls, I had to prune off all the dead branches in spring, I'm wondering if it was the snow and then the bright sun after?

I had an escallonia very similar to this, but it had a different name and I think Brian rings a bell. I have no idea why on earth I took it out. I seem to recall I was not pleased with the way it was spreading rather than going upwards...but why on earth I didn't prune it I have no idea. I must have been in a really bad mood that day! Anyway, now I have to start all over again!

They do spread out Karen and I just prune them back to where I want them. Gold Brian was bought by a very good friend because of the name !!! ( remember my surname ) :-))))

Very apt! Is there a rose called Ann, or a clematis? There is nothing called Karen that I can find. There's a clematis called Kaen...close but not quite there!

That would be good....better than Kaen, that sounds like you've had one too many sloe gins ;-))
