Thanks Meanie. This patch had been a bramble filled, tatty old, Escallonia hedge, adjoining an equally bramble filled clump of visciously spiky Yuccas which we chopped down and routed out last year. Until I can be certain that we have removed every scrap of root of these, I'm planting temporary stuff here. I grew the sweetpeas from seed and was delighted how many came up. I think I transplanted 50 to 60 plants and the sight and smell were delightful all summer. I'll probably do the same next year.
