My Orange-Red orchid has about a hundred stems in this pot. It has gotten very full in the year and half since my neighbor gave it to me. Photo taken Dec. 30, 2010.

Tugbrethil:
The leaves turn red in full sun. This plant was in semi-shade for most of summer. I moved it a couple a months ago to this spot...it will bloom more in full sun.

Ah! The few I've seen here are never in full sun.

Tugbrethil:
Here they grow in full sun along the coast...and in semi-shade in the inland areas.

The flowers should be larger. I think I need to fertilize. :>)
Yes, my neighbor gave me this plant and several babies from all their orchid varieties. They have orange, red, yellow, white, purple, and pink varieties of Epidendrum orchids

Epidendrum are one of the easiest orchids to grow...also, they can grow to 6ft/2m tall

Sixpence:
I've actually seen them more than 8ft/2.4m tall in some gardens (up to the roof's eaves).

That is high are they hardy
6 Feb, 2011
Yes, they'll tolerate temps down to 40ºF/4.5ºC. as a morning low (though not every day) as long as the high temp for the day is at or above 68ºF/20ºC.
However, their optimum winter temps should be a high: 68ºF/20ºC and morning low: 55ºF/13ºC.
