I wasn't aware that my parents lived in a hell hole.

Oh dear~ have I offended you?!
Forgive me. It was my experience as a visitor over Easter.
There were a couple of hairy moments, in Times Sq and Chinatown and these marred the trip there on for me. I couldn't relax as much as I would have liked. However, when it was good it was fantastic, and I'm not just saying that.

No offense Crystaltips. Your comment just reminded me that many people like yourself who visit the city get to see very little of the beauty and all great stuff in the city. They have a couple not so pleasant experiences again like yourself and it leaves them with a feeling that this is not a good place. I have never lived in the city itself but my parents lived there until they passed away and I have quite a few friends who do. Some of them have small gardens behind their brownstones that are to die for. I guess because I visit the city frequently I've become accustomed to the hecticness and chaos. If you ever visit again I hope that your visit is more pleasant. By the way... Welcome to GOY :)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
............oh no, that's the Lake District.

i was pleasantly surprised at this haven in a hell hole.
They recommend you don't go there after dark, but i'd defy that instruction as i believe it's as wonderous of an evening as it is during the day.
