Allium nigrum

Allium nigrum (Allium nigrum)

I'm appreciating alliums more and more to bridge the gap between spring and summer flowers. I grow them between other plants as their leaves start to go tatty just as the flowers come out. This one grows between one and three feet tall. Does anyone know why it is called nigrum (which means black) when the flowers are white?

I am looking for more Alliums to plant I might try this one Andrew. It gets its name from the dark centres to its flowers so did you find the centres turned black?
