Is the stem below the damaged leaves soft?

yes all the stems are soft to about 6 inches below

Wow! Well, that's definitely freeze damage. In time you should be able to cut the damaged areas off...then it should put out new buds.

This looks familiar. I feel sad every time I think about mine as it had grown more than a foot during the summer and was producing 2 new shoots at the bottom. Now it is just a pasty looking stalk, I can't bear to take a photograph !!!. It had spent the previous winter out in the snow but obviously the frost was so bad this time around. I will try again this year and take better care of it !

Hopefully in spring it may just come back.Check around the base for little ones in spring early summer
