have taken out my pampass grass which had turned into a soggy pile of mush & have planted Cornus alba kesselringii which has lovely burgandy coloured stems...

The lower part of my garden has a high water-table, so dogwoods seem a good idea.
Your kesselringii is one I shall definitely have as it seems you've made a good choice!
