I love Clematis!!! That looks a great colour - I appreciate that as now it is off to GC again in search !!!

That looks a lot like my purple spider....sad to say I think mine is dead. I don't think the cold is the culprit as they are pretty hardy....it was new last year and I don't think it ever got established.....sigh!

I think the colour on the label is a little 'over enhanced!!' I love these early clems too, such prolific flowers. Sorry to hear about your clem Karen, maybe it will grow from the bottom, they say to leave them a year when you think they are dead......!

I am leaving it where it is for now. Cut it back today and I'll just wait and see.

Hope it grows back for you Karen, I have a Natascha clem that I think has gone, sad, I love that one!

Its not much of a grower in my garden though Lulu.

That amazes me Karen, most things seem to grow in your beautiful garden, especially Clems! I re planted my last years Rebecca which I had in a pot. Hope she does well.....!

Well, to be fair to the poor thing, it's in heavy clay on the N.E. facing fence, so it gets absolutely no sunshine all winter! It's a hard life for it, but something has to be planted there!! lol.....believe me Lulu, not everything succeeds in my garden ;)

Clay maybe not!! they like very free draining don't they.

To be honest, I think they will grow in most soils, but they hate having dry roots, so probably better in my soil than in very free draining. Their roots remind me of noodles, that are that yellow colour, and the size of them too... like when you get a chow mein! lol!

That's true they did look like noodles! Will have to hopr the roots won't get too hot. Some plants will grow to shade them come summer though. May put something down for them but then I worry the snails will hide there!

Yes, that's a moot point. I don't put anything around the roots because my soil is cool enough! I do water them quite a lot though, partly because they are so densely planted, and partly because they are beside the fence or beside trees and shrubs. The watering makes a big difference. I also feed them...with general feed or bonemeal or chicken pellets or whatever...in the spring and then later on they'll get a dose of liquid feed as well.

I will water them alot more this year, all of them being close to the wall!

Good plan!
