16 Mar, 2011

My dad used to sharpen his knife on the doorstep too..I had forgotten about that ! that knife was used forever,it seemed, and was worn so thin, its a wonder it didn't snap..lovely memories..:o)

They use to come over here during the war and the onion man on his bicycle. Take note no litter like here.

16 Mar, 2011

We used to have a bloke on a bike that came around to sharpen knives, used the bike to turn the sharpening wheel..there used to be sweeps that knocked at your door asking if you wanted your chimney swept..our milkman had a lovely white horse that pulled his float and that went for the rag and bone man too, a brown horse tho. And we regularly saw the dray horses from Georges Brewery trotting around the town! How old does that make me....Clarice, you are not alone!

Dear me Yorkie, you do have a line that works doncha? lol! And Mark falls for it!!!
Still they were great memories, the days playing marbles in the gutter (no one said anything about germs, just that you would get the pip sitting on cold kerbs), hopscotch in the middle of the road with our single "famous" motor car that didnt move very often. The danger of being knocked over by a cyclist! Playing knock-out ginger..playing imaginary games (I was always Champion the Wonder Horse). AND I was Queen Elizabeth II in the street party...now Im more like the QEII!!!

Great memories Tet, no T.V. went out all evening and your parents knew you were safe, hoola hoop I was the champ at that, cricket with all the boys, I had one roller skate, but boy could I move on it, as you say hop scotch marbles and everything else, we had a great childhood, I was Roy Rogers when we played cowboys and indians, my horse was the top of the garden gate, my goodness today its all, mobile phones and computers, no imagination left,

Remember the " tent" which was a wooden clothes horse, with an old blanket over ? secret space..and I just loved my first grown up two wheeler bike, a second hand one..complete with Sturmey Archer 3 gears..very posh!!.first time I rode it down our big hill,I wondered why it was bumping along, till I tried to turn the corner at the bottom, and it wouldn't turn..I sailed over a neighbours fence ,as it a flat tyre ! the bike wheel was a bit buckled, but good old dad fixed it ..:o) Luckily,I only had bumps and bruises..

20 Mar, 2011

Oh yer, I forgot about the tent, I got my first bike when I was about 13, my sister gave it to me, not a posh one like yours Bloomer,we used to go over to the railway bank and pick cow slips, made bows and arrows, I used to unscrew the pointed end of my Dads darts and screw them on the end of my arrow, my Dad was not pleased when he had a dart match on and the darts were blunt, Memories Aye,

Wow reading all these memories really takes me back, what about the whip and Top, used to chalk lovely patterns on them, the swing around the Lampost was the most sought after I had many a bump on my forehead and the concerts my friend and I used to put on in my Grans backyard, we used to charge the local kids halfpenny to come in, a pair of curtian draped on the clothes line was our stage and my Mum and Gran in stiches laughing at our antics. Our favourite piece was Keep Young and Beautiful. picture it a pair of scrawny girls wearing glasses lying on the ground kicking our legs in the air with our navy knickers on show! lol

20 Mar, 2011

what have we started here Pp, we had a rope tied to a huge oak tree that went over a spinny, the rope had a huge knot on the end we had to sit on, and we used to jump off and land in a huge bush, bike wheels we used to roll using a stick, and what with navy blue knickers thats one I would rather forget, I used to keep my hanky up the leg of them, Oh Carol, the kids today don't know what they missing out on, as I said earlie its all computers and mobile phones,

20 Mar, 2011

OMG,the navy blue knickers !!,..I was posh,I had a pocket in mine..Lol...just the thought of reaching for my hankie ,makes me cringe..we would get done for enticement, these days...:o)),and we didn't look anything like Britney Spears in the Gymslip either..Lol

20 Mar, 2011

you was posh having a pocket, I had to stick my hankie up my knicker leg,

21 Mar, 2011

ooh,how common! Lol..you know I am only joking,don't you ? ha ha..

21 Mar, 2011

we were not common Bloomer, poor more like it, they were probally hand me downs anyway, Lol they probally belonged to my two older sisters,

22 Mar, 2011

Still laughing at the thought of hand me down Knickers,Yorkshire LOl :o))))))))))))).We were poor too,but I have no sisters,so I wasn't as lucky as you..erm ,no brothers either,in case you were wondering :o)

22 Mar, 2011

Oh you lucky thing, you had brand new knickers, you must have been rich, Lol

23 Mar, 2011

Sheer necessity,Val..I was an only one..:o)

24 Mar, 2011

Well I had maroon knickers so there! and as I was the eldest I got the new ones lol! But my school uniform was so expensive, those that won scolarships could sneak into the head nun's wardrobe and buy rich kids left overs cheaply! My overcoat was secondhand, it wouldve cost £40. It was all supplied by Horne Bros..this is the 1950's Im talking about. Mum scrubbed the front of a very posh shop and cleaned it, before going to work, just to pay for it.
My OH used to earn more before he left school, than when he had a real job. He had 3 paper rounds, used to pick blackberries and sell them, collect firewood and sell that, got paid for blackcurrent picking..he bought all his own clothes from about 12 years old at a working man's shop!
Kids got it made these days surely...

24 Mar, 2011

Maroon knickers, a bit posh there tet, did you have a pocket or just a knicker leg for your hankie, did you go to a Nun school then, what a good thing to be able to buy second hand clothing, or rather rich kids left overs. your Mum worked hard like my Mum did, and your OH, your husband would be proud of himself working to earn money, we used to go spud bashing during the school holidays, think we got 6d a sack, boy it was hard work, but did'nt do us any harm, yes Tet the kids do have it easy today, to damn easy, all served on a silver plate, its all computers mobile phones and these computer games,

24 Mar, 2011

I used to go spud picking, and swedes too, although we always knew them as turnips then,Yorkshire, and yes,it was hard work. Also went raspberry and strawberry picking as well...all for a pittance. My mum could never work, owing to ill health ,so it helped to let me have some extra spending money.I agree ,a lot of them have it easy, which doesn't do them any favours in the long run..but that is usually the fault of the parents, for giving in to their every whim..think we have all seen the screamers getting their own way in the shops, till they get what they want..grrr !..Right,rant over .....and your maroon knickers Tet? how classy..:o))

24 Mar, 2011

Couldve been classier Bloomer, our colours were maroon and cream..but somehow I guess the nuns drew the line at cream knicks..
Talking about screaming kids..I love that add where the boy wants something, starts kicking up a fuss and the mother lays on the ground and drums her heels..love the look on the boy's face..the shock and silence!! lol! So if we arent allowed to slap our kids, guess the next best thing is for US to have a tantrum!!

24 Mar, 2011

Tet,I loved that ad too..if only!

25 Mar, 2011

I love that ad too, maybe thats what a lot of parents should do.
