I have read it stops roses getting aphids.

Or onions I put my garlic in a pot at the foot of the rose, also you can hang on the rose, but I thought I could have a crop while doing the job of keeping aphids away, I recall some one saying if you plant garlic on the shortest day of the year it will be ready by the longest day of the year.
