Fiddle Heads

Never thought of it before but they do look like fiddle heads !

this north facing hillside is covered with these ferns..cinnamomea, I think. They are called "fiddle heads" for the obvious reason and they are a (regional) veg delicacy. They are eaten when in the curled emergent phase...steamed...and supposedly taste spinchy..(I've never tried them) All the wild flowers have sprung into life as we have received a couple of inches of rain over the last two days and it looks like the week will be wet! great fern weather...when I was cleaning the deadwood out of this area I moved a piece of log and found an amphibian of some sort...no camera ..no pic...but it was a totally black salamander and it was cold enough that he wasn't moving at all..I replaced the log carefully and left him to his hibernation. We actually got three days in a row of warm weather and the change in the plants and creatures was amazing, but now it's back to cold, windy and wet!

Oh dear Lori, when are you going to get some nice weather ? How lovely to find that salamander, was it very big, or just tiny. Isnt it always the way when you want a camera its never to hand

Thanks for your comment, Cinders...the salamander was about 4 inches long, and although I didn't confirm it by turning him over, I think he is the type with the bright red dots on his tummy. was worried I could do him harm by exposing him to the elements, so replaced log and hoped for the best for him. AAAAnd our weather...it's a very sore subject. I have "issues" with my camera too...sore as a blister, that's me! lol Spring where are you???
