Bird-of-Paradise is almost as widely used in the San Francisco Bay Area as in San Diego. These were just finishing their bloom cycle. Photo taken in Mission San Jose District, Fremont, CA. on May 15, 2011.

Sandra:
I hope it blooms for you! However, in the northern hemisphere it's typically a fall - spring blooming plant.

Here in San Diego, CA. Bird-of-Paradise is commonly used everywhere as landscape shrub; there's many millions. Up in Los Angeles it's the official flower of the city.

Even in the bay area, bop is now used in street dividers. It used to be Escallonia and ice plant. Times have changed.

Yes, I have notice the last time I was up there. It's a really good flowering plant which blooms for a long time. (with little water).
