they look like grapes... great to be able to contribute to a birds dinner, aye? I would like to grow mahonia but I think it is too tender for my climate...really should take a serious look.

They do indeed Lori never noiced that lol .I think they will tolorate some low tempatures ,but your winters might just be a bit too cold for one ,but it would pay to have a look .

My boys love eating them too. One day I am going to make a jelly from them and salal berries.

Yes they are edible, skin is a bit thick and the seed is large but quite tasty.

Well, there's my lesson for today...I did not know you could eat Salal berries... or Mahonia, either for that matter. Thanks Sarah.

Lori, I have mahonia on the (eek!) north side of my house. It was there when I moved here and survives, but it does take a beating in the winter, with a lot of leaf damage at times. I thought it was a holly until I discovered this site! Maybe if you sheltered it in winter? What zone are you in; this is 6b.

Well that must have been a shock Grammazoo... I'm in 5b though...if memory serves I wanted a mahonia and almost bought one way back in 2000, but for a quick check of the plant encyclopedia at the library. too chancy, so it was down to a silver lace vine or a dutchmans pipe...I bought silverlace and it lasted two seasons... live and learn...
