The people before us left an old bike helmet on a nail inside the shed...I think that's her nest. I stay strictly away from it...I put out bread and seeds for her on a stump beside the cedar feeder tree...and she sits and eats while I keep her company. One day she disappeared and she was hiding under one of the large shelf fungus on the stump..flat to the ground. It was very strange indeed, as she had been eating happily seconds before. I cast my eyes skyward and there was a large hawk lazily circling....
I watched the hawk until it was out of sight...then I turned to her and said: ..It's ok now..he's gone. and she hopped out and resumed her dinner! I was thrilled that she trusted me enough to eat the food I left and to take my word for the fact that the hawk was gone. Isn't nature wonderful?

thanks Amy...I have to wonder what her version of the story would be! Sad addendum...we lost most of the little squirrels and chipmunks to that hawk and her family. We watch Rufus very carefully when he's outdoors for fear the hawks may try to take him too! It's a bit of irony that Rufus has become a hunter...and only today I had to try to take a chipmunk out of his jaws! sigh... such is life.
