Hi Bloomer I had no luck with these till I moved them to full sun, poor gritty soil and I dont feed or water. Also I dont have any tall ones which can get very untidy. Thanks Sheila.

That one looks quite short so did you buy it as an alpine variety Denise ?
It's true that dianthus thrive in terrible soil ..... thin, poor, stoney ...... and preferably sunbaked !!!
They prefer it to be alkaline too really.

I have no chance then,as all mine is well composted and I got rid of all the stones..more builders rubble actually..
Oh well,I can look at all the lovely ones on here.Lol.

Ah, sorry Bloomer, your soil is far too rich then.
If you really wanted a good display of them you could remove the good stuff and replace it with gritty thin soil (in a dry sunny area) a few feet across and they would probably settle in just fine :-)

Now if I had known that nine years ago, when we first moved into this new build,I could have had some .Lol.I have spent too much time and money getting it decent..look what I could have saved !..My daughters garden is like that..they are not gardeners,I'm sorry to say,so might be just the thing :o)

Lol, mine pretty much want to be ignore ;-)
Yours are great red Drc726, colour just jumps at you.
I'm another one that only grows the alpine ones. Started with the usual tall ones but they got so messy i switched to the small ones.

Louise I have had these some time, but I usually find them in the alpine/rockery sections when they are flowering so I can see the colour and height.
