Gorgeous,Cinders..what is the difference between this and an Orchid, please ?...I can see it has leaves growing up a long stem, instead of just at the bottom,..is this the only difference?

I don't really know Sandra, but I assume, like you that is the reason. I have had it three or four years now, given on Mothers day, it looks a bit tatty to what it used to, but it still flowers well. Need to ask AndrewR.

I've just been googling it Sandra, and I can't find anything that resembles it, but on the label it says Orchidee. On the net they just show phalenopsis for it, so I don't know.

Thanks for looking ,Cinders..It is nothing like the Phalenopsis that I have..but maybe just from the same family..

Orchidee is a translation of Orchidaceae. The taxonomy of the orchid family is in constant flux!
This is a nobile Dendrobium, a member of a different subfamily to the Phalaenopsis (and Paphiopedilum, Cattleya and Oncidiums to name but a very few).
The canes loose their leaves after flowering once, twice or if you're lucky three times. No big deal, as the young canes will produce flowers. The old leafless canes remain for as long as they're required to store food reserves.
It is possible to cut these canes into two inch or so lengths to provide divisions.
This is my nobile......
